The Challenge
Matrix Automation Group designs and builds custom
assembly, packaging, and production machinery for a
variety of industries. The company needed a faster way to
deliver affordable automation equipment. The company's 2D
AutoCAD design software did not offer the capabilities the
engineering staff needed to compress design time and catch
design flaws before they resulted in costly fabrication
errors.
The Solution
Matrix considered using Pro/ENGINEER, but chose SolidWorks
for its comprehensive 3D modeling capabilities. The
company is able to generate multiple views quickly and
detect interference and collision problems early in the
design cycle. The file compatibility allows users to save
detailed drawings of SolidWorks models as AutoCAD files,
complete with dimensions, notes, and other annotations
assigned to the appropriate layers. Configuration
functions in SolidWorks allow Matrix to change the
parameters in projects it has already completed to meet
the specifications of new customers, compressing months of
redesign time into a few days. The company also uses
PhotoWorks to create photorealistic views so customers can
understand designs more quickly.
Summary and Metrics:
- Reduced design time from 16 weeks to a few days
- Decreased the time to generate multiple isometric
views to less than one minute
- Improved the company's project cost margins
- Increased the leeway in competitively pricing its
services
